How to unlock your Vehicle

Modern electronic key fobs offer superior convenience and performance to a traditional manual key. Batteries eventually degrade and require replacement. You can replace the Volvo key fob batteries by following a couple of steps. First, locate a clean work surface to begin the process. Lay out all of the tools needed. Then, locate the battery's hatch and turn it open using a flathead, coin, or another similar tool. Next, carefully pry the battery from its socket by lifting up on the side that is closest to the key-ring loop. Use rubber gloves to shield the clips and electronic contact surfaces.

Place the new battery in the socket after the old one has been removed. Make sure that the positive end of the battery is facing up and that all clips are seated. Slide the cover down toward the key-ring section until it becomes loose, and is able to slide off. Then, you can remove the cover to reveal the key blade that is hidden within. It can be used to unlock your car from the driver's door if you have lost or damaged the key fob.

How to Start Your Vehicle

Modern vehicles come with keyfobs that do more than just unlock and secure the doors. They can also perform other functions like summoning and auto parking the vehicle. In fact, the new Volvo XC60 can even remotely start your engine with its key fob buttons. But how exactly does it work?

First, locate a clean work surface where you can lay out all the required items for this project. Place the fob on top of the surface with the Volvo logo facing upwards. Use a flathead or coin, or another similar tool to open the battery hatch. Be careful not to touch the electronic contact surfaces with your tools. This can cause the fob to stop functioning properly.

When the hatch is opened then slide the battery into its socket and make sure it is in the correct position with the positive (+) side facing up. Once the clips have been locked into place, replace the battery cover, and then reassemble the fob.

By pressing the unlock button just once the alarm will disengaged and the driver's door will be unlocked. When you press it a second time it will unlock all the doors and tailgate. The unlock button is useful to roll down the windows to let in fresh, cool air on a hot summer day. If you're in the market for more than that, the key fob could also be used to activate ERS, which will activate your vehicle's climate control system and warm or cool it to your preferred temperature setting when the vehicle is at a stop.

How to Replace the Battery

If your key fob no longer locks or unlocks your car it is possible that it is time to replace the battery. It's easy and requires only a small screwdriver that is flat or a plastic pry bar tool. Find the small slot houses the backup/emergency ignition key made of steel. Use the blade of a screwdriver, or prybar tool into this slot and gently push the rear of the fob. Once the fob is opened, locate the CR2032 3V battery and remove it. Place a new battery in its place, and join the fob.

Note: Older Volvos have a different battery, the CR2025. CR2025 batteries have 7 tenths of millimeters less than a CR2032 which means you'll need to be very careful when replacing your battery.

The key fob in your car has the transponder chip programmed to your volvo c30 key. When you insert the key fob into the ignition barrel a transponder chip reads the code and compares it with the one stored in the start inhibitor module of your car. If the codes aren't compatible the car won't start. This is an essential anti-theft feature that will stop your Volvo car from beginning if you use the wrong key.
